Catch Me if You Can (2002)

“Dear Dad, you always told me that an honest man has nothing to fear, so I’m trying my best not to be afraid.”

Catch Me if You Can opens with the game show ‘To Tell The Truth’ where three men, one of them the real Frank Abagnale Jr, the others just actors, tell the story of how con man Frank Abagnale Jr managed to impersonate an airline pilot, a chief resident pediatrician, an assistant attorney and cash $4 million in fraudulent checks; all before his 19th birthday.  This Spielberg, Hanks, DiCaprio collaboration makes for a truly amazing drama and one of my favorite movies of all time.

The acting is perfect.  Catch Me if You Can has an all-star cast, boasting the names Leonardo DiCaprio, Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks, Martin Sheen and Amy Adams, who all deliver stellar performances.  DiCaprio plays the titular character Frank Abagnale Jr, a genius con man.  DiCaprio manages to make the lying and stealing Abagnale a smooth and charming character who is remarkably clever, immensely lovable and will have the audience rooting for him the whole time; fascinated by his cons and cunningness.  He is sweet and there is something almost innocent about him.  Tom Hanks plays Carl Hanratty, the FBI agent who chases Abagnale over the course of many years.  As would be expected from him, Hank’s performance is nothing below superb.

The passage of time is shown through Christmases; every one that passes Hanratty continues pursuing the ever elusive Abagnale.  By the end of the film, there is an undeniable friendship between the persistent FBI agent and the con man; a genuine bond that must comes from being chased by one man for such a long time.  Hanks and DiCaprio work perfectly together.

The production design is flawless; the sets, costumes, lighting and cinematography add to the aesthetically pleasing 1960s and seventies era.  Though the story is about a criminal, the movie is light and fun and happy.  Catch Me if You Can is one of those rare films that comes only once in a very long while and is in a class of its own.  That really doesn’t have any flaws, that has an amazing cast with great acting.  That has a story so unique and fascinating.  Catch Me if You Can is a truly wonderful piece of cinema; it’s exciting, entertaining and for me at least, can be watched again and again and again.
